טקס מלכת היופי 2013: תוכנית הריאליטי

Image

Toronto weather: Schools open but some buses cancelled in aftermath of storm

Image
Most schools are open this morning but buses are cancelled in parts of the GTA after a storm that dumped a sloppy mix of rain and snow throughout the region. The snowfall warning has ended for Toronto, but continues for York, Durham, Halton and Peel, where an additional five centimetres of wet snow are expected today. Environment Canada reports 10 centimetres of snow fell during the night. Schools and buses in Toronto as operating as usual. Buses are cancelled and some schools are closed in Wellington-Dufferin. All Peel School Board buses are cancelled today in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga, but schools and offices remain open; as is the case for the Halton District School Board and Catholic School Board, York Catholic District School Board and the Durham District School Board and Catholic School Board north of Hwy. 7. At Pearson Airport, almost 300 inbound and outbound flights had been cancelled by early this morning, representing 20 per cent of air traffic. At Billy...

Big Brother Canada: Does It Fit With The Franchise?

Image
Big Brother Canada We're so nice, aren't we? At least, that's how the stereotype goes. Canadians work extra hard to be kind to others and we always say "sorry," even if it's not our fault. So how well does a devious, underhanded reality game show like Big Brother fare in Canada? Can Big Brother Canada match the duplicitous behaviour we've witnessed on the U.S. version? Do we have it in us to pit one person against the other, consequences be damned? As I previously noted for the Real Housewives Of Vancouver premiere last year, anything is possible on reality shows. Seemingly harmless folks become vipers, and aggressive egoists can break down in a fountain of tears with the right trigger. It really all comes down to production; what masterwork of challenges, rewards and trickery have the producers of Big Brother Canada come up with? Select members of the media were allowed to access the house and participate in a mock segment two weeks ago,...

Budget 2013: Chidambaram walks tightrope, levies surcharge on super-rich

NEW DELHI: Resisting the temptation of election-year populism, the general Budget on Thursday offered no major tax sops but slapped a surcharge on the super-rich, raised duties on mobile phones, cigarettes and imported luxury vehicles and introduced TDS on property sale above Rs 50 lakh. Presenting UPA-II's last full-fledged Budget ahead of net year's general elections to net in an additional Rs 18,000 crore, finance minister P Chidambaram did a tightrope walk balancing growth needs with fiscal prudence by stepping up expenditure in social sectors and cutting subsidies. In a Budget that pegs fiscal deficit at 4.8 per cent of GDP, defence allocation has been stepped up by 14 per cent over the revised expenditure in the current year to Rs 2,03,672 crore in the next. Without changing the basic slabs and rates in income tax rates, Chidambaram gave a benefit of Rs 2,000 to individual tax payers with taxable income of up to Rs 5 lakh, that will benefit 1.8 crore tax payers en...

Reid Endorses Sequestration

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said today he would support letting the sequester – $85 billion in automatic spending reductions – take effect on March 1 if Republicans do not agree to raise taxes, something they have absolutely ruled out after agreeing to a $600 billion tax increase as part of the fiscal-cliff deal. “Until there’s some agreement on revenue, I think we should just go ahead with the sequester,” Reid told reporters following a meeting with Senate Democrats. I wrote yesterday on why Democrats might, privately at least, welcome sequestration, which cuts defense without touching entitlement programs, as an acceptable outcome that, as Senator Ben Cardin (D., Md.) said in 2011, will not be “devastating to our priorities.”

Jodi Arias Trial See Tempers Flare

Earlier in the day, tempers flared between Arias and prosecutor Martinez as the prosecutor tried to detail Arias' history of spying on her boyfriends, but Arias complained that his aggressive style of questioning made her "brain scramble." Arias and Martinez, who have sparred throughout two prior days of cross-examination, spent more than 10 minutes bickering over Martinez's word choices and his apparent "anger." The morning's testimony, and Martinez's points about Arias' alleged spying, were largely interrupted by the spats. "Are you having trouble understanding me?" Martinez yelled. "Yes because sometimes cause you go in circles," Arias answered.

The testimony came as Martinez continued his efforts to discredit Arias' testimony on the stand, including her statements that she often succumbed to Alexander's sexual fantasies so she wouldn't hurt his feelings. Martinez has focused on portraying Arias as a liar for much of his direct examination. Arias is charged with murder for killing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander at his home in Mesa, Ariz., in June 2008. She claims she killed him in self defense and that he had been increasingly violent and sexually demanding in the months before the confrontation. She also claimed he was interested in young boys. The prosecution claims she killed him in a jealous rage. She could face the death penalty if convicted of first degree murder.

Jodi Arias Admits Enjoying Some Sex, Maintains She 'Felt Like a Prostitute'

http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/abc_jodi_arias_jef_130226_wg.jpg Though accused murderer Jodi Arias said she sometimes felt "like a prostitute" at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, she admitted today that she often enjoyed their sex life and even suggested sex acts they could try. Prosecutor Juan Martinez, after a day of aggressive questioning and bickering with Arias, asked her about her own suggestions for her sex life with Alexander, including a phone conversation in which she suggested using sexual lubricant. Arias, 32, is accused of killing Alexander, but claims it was in self-defense. Timeline of the Jodi Arias Trial "You introduced KY Jelly into the relationship to make it more sexually enjoyable, right? When we're talking about the level of experimentation, it looks like both of you were experimenting together sexually. So when we hear things like, 'I felt like a prostitute,' that's not exactly true, is it?" Martinez sai...

Rail Budget 2013: Upgraded IRCTC website to handle 120,000 users at a time

Earn Free Money by Facebook NEW DELHI: The railway minister's announcement to upgrade the IRCTC website and make it accessible through mobile phones has brought smiles on the face of thousands of exasperated people who struggle for hours, often unsuccessfully, to book tickets online. The new technology will be able to handle 120,000 simultaneous users at any point against the current capacity of 40,000. It can easily be scaled up as demand increases in future. It will also allow 7,200 tickets to be booked every minute as against 2,000 tickets now. "The most common complaint we received from users was that the website hanged due to traffic overload and by the time one would log in all tickets were sold. Those seeking tatkal tickets were worst-affected. But with the new software, a next-generation system, booking rates will be higher, too," said a senior official. The new system is likely to fully-operational by the end of this year. Passengers will now be able t...

Water Bear

Water Bear The lead section of this article may need to be rewritten. Please discuss this issue on the talk page and read the layout guide to make sure the section will be inclusive of all essential details. (January 2013) Tardigrades (commonly known as waterbears or moss piglets)[2] are small, water-dwelling, segmented animals with eight legs. They are notable for being one of the most complex of all known polyextremophiles. (An extremophile is an organism that can thrive in a physically or geochemically extreme condition that would be detrimental to most life on Earth.[3][4]) Tardigrades can withstand temperatures from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water. They can survive pressures greater than any found in the deepest ocean trenches and have lived through the vacuum of outer space. They can survive solar radiation, gamma radiation, ionic radiation— at doses hundreds of times higher than would kill a person. They can go without food or water f...

Air India may join Jet Airways in slashing airfares to bag more travellers

NEW DELHI: With major carriers slashing airfares following Jet Airways' offering of 20 lakh seats at Rs 2250 for travel till the year-end, Air India today said it might join the competition to bag more air travellers. However, the government did not expect the low fares to breach the lowest fare bucket given by the airlines to aviation regulator DGCA. "We are watching the situation. Air India shall respond to this depending on how the situation develops," Air India CMD Rohit Nandan said here. Budget carriers SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo jumped into the fray and began offering similar or lower discounts on select routes, after Jet AirwaysBSE -4.00 % yesterday announced slashing domestic airfares on two million seats by more than half for travel through the year. Asked whether these latest low fares would lead to a fare war and predatory pricing that could hit the bottomlines of the already troubled airlines, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said, "We don...

Grammys 2013: Chris Brown, Rihanna Get Cozy

Image
What a difference four years makes. The most talked about moment of the 55th Grammy Awards took place in the audience as Chris Brown, 23, and Rihanna, 24, were spotted smiling and cuddling. The two walked the red carpet separately but once inside the Staples Center, Brown and Rihanna got cozy. Rihanna, decked out in a red dress, was photographed leaning her head on Brown’s shoulder with a huge smile. The two lovebirds have come a long way in just four years. On the eve of the 2009 Grammys, Brown assaulted Rihanna, whose bruised face became a tabloid fixture. PHOTOS: Best and Worst Dressed Grammys Last Wednesday, Brown appeared in court to face accusations that he violated his probation by submitting false community service records in connection with his sentence for assaulting Rihanna. Rihanna stuck by her man and showed up in court with him. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Rihanna said dating Brown makes her happy and “if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake.” In...

Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Sting Pay Tribute to Bob Marley at Grammys

Image
A genre-spanning collection of artists, including Bruno Mars, Sting and Rihanna, all of whose music was influenced by Bob Marley, gathered together on the Grammy stage Sunday night to pay tribute to the late reggae icon. The musicians performed original songs influenced by Marley as well as a group cover of his classic number "Could You Be Loved." Photos: Grammy Awards 2013 Mars, wearing a signature fedora, kicked off the performance with a high-energy take on his hit single "Locked Out of Heaven," from his latest album, Unorthodox Jukebox. With Mars's song drawing clear inspiration from the Police, it was rather fitting that Sting emerged to join the pop star, crooning the second verse of the song with his bass in tow. The roles were then swapped: Sting launched into the reggae-tinged 1979 Police classic "Walking on the Moon" as Mars provided both vocal and guitar support. "None of this would be possible without Bob Marley," Mars...

'The Walking Dead' Midseason Premiere Review: The Suicide King

Image
In the first half of Season 3 of AMC’s The Walking Dead, we witnessed the decline of our chief protagonist, Rick Grimes, into what appeared to be an ever more fleeting grasp on reality. First it was his rage and his guilt both over his wife’s relationship with his friend Shane and his eventual killing of Shane. Then, when Lori died during child birth, Rick slipped over the edge. He began to hear imaginary phone calls from the dead. But then, for a moment, it appeared his ghosts had abandoned him, that he would pull through. The old Rick emerged from that dark place and came back into the world, ready to bash in some zombie skulls and protect his loved ones. In the midseason premiere, we find ourselves only moments after where we left off (hanging from a cliff.) Newly reunited brothers, Daryl and Merle Dixon, have been pitted against one another in a fight to the death, hemmed in by walkers and a bloodthirsty crowd. Rick and Maggie show up guns blazing and the four of the...

Grammys 2013: Mumford & Sons win album of the year

Image
High-energy arena-folk act Mumford & Sons triumphed over relative newcomers such as Frank Ocean and Fun. to win the most prestigious Grammy prize, album of the year, for its "Babel." The turned-to-11 folk of "Babel" was the only album of the year nominee currently in the top 10. "Babel," at No. 7 heading into the Grammys, has sold more than 1.7 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The sophomore album from Mumford & Sons was released on Glassnote Records in September and at the time had the biggest debut sales week of 2012, selling approximately 600,000 copies. "Babel" would soon be eclipsed by Taylor Swift's "Red," which sold more than 1 million copies when it debuted. Ultimately "Babel" finished 2012 as the year's fourth-bestselling album. Kate Upton Revealed as 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Cover Girl

Image
Hey look, it's Kate Upton...again! For the second year in a row, the blond beauty is the cover girl of choice for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the big reveal coming via leak earlier today. No wonder David Letterman has nine other models lined up for Monday's show in addition to Upton—there's no such thing as a big official reveal anymore! Is the coat too much? Check out Kate in lingerie! "Congratulations Ms.@kateupton !! Making history!" tweeted 2010 cover girl Brooklyn Decker. This actually marks Upton's third straight appearance on the cover, counting an inset pic in 2011, when she was named SI's Rookie of the Year. But this is the first year the Michigan-born, Florida-bred bombshell is wearing no bikini top—and a coat! How much did Kate Upton get paid for her Super Bowl ad? SI took the shoot down to Antarctica for its "Polar Bare" theme, which must have tested the models' acting chops, too. How else do you pretend tha...

Alive and kicking, Kader Khan dispels 'RIP' rumours

Image
Kader Khan has become the latest celebrity victim of an internet hoax as social networking sites were abuzz today with rumours about the actor's demise. Rumours gained traction when a 'RIP Kader Khan' Facebook page was made, after which many took to micro-blogging site Twitter to pass on their condolences. However, there was a debate online as some believed the reports to be frivolous. "Kader Khan the legendary Bollywood actor, comedian, script and dialogue writer and director passed away today. May his soul rest in peace!," posted one user and there were several other tweets in the same vein. But the air was cleared sooner rather than later. Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Tanuj Garg said, "Kader Khan is fine. Why then are people bombarding my inbox with bad news?" Another user tweeted, "Twitter & Facebook should be screened to stop hoax, pranks and rumors. Lamers here just killed a healthy legend. #Kader Khan is alive." The...

'ABCD' Review: Any Body Can Dance, but the same can't be said of acting

Image
Cast: Prabhu Deva, Kay Kay Menon Director: Remo D'Souza 'ABCD', an acronym for Any Body Can Dance, should have been more fun than it is, given that it's a true-blue 3D dance movie packed with energetic musical set-pieces. But the film suffers from the same malady that plagues this genre everywhere. Like the "Step Up" movies from which it's evidently inspired, "ABCD" has a threadbare, predictable plot, and a cast of professional dancers who can break into gravity-defying moves but can't deliver a line of dialogue convincingly. VideoPhotoGallery At 2 hours and 20 minutes, 'ABCD' is too long but there's some genuinely original choreography up there. Prabhu Deva stars as Vishnu, the chief instructor at a big-league dance company, who finds himself out in the cold when his shallow business partner (Kay Kay Menon) gives his job to a fancy American choreographer. Encouraged by a friend, Vishnu decides to start his own ...

Jagjit Singh's 72nd birthday marked by Google doodle

Image
Jagjit Singh, popularly known as the Ghazal King, is the subject of Friday's Google doodle in India. Jagjit Singh was born Jagmohan Singh in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India on 8 February 1941. His musical talent was spotted at an early age and his father encouraged him to learn music from prominent talents of the time. In 1965, at age 24, he decided to head to Bombay to try and make a career in music. In Mumbai Singh met Chitra Dutta, who was unhappily married at the time. She went on to divorce her husband and married Singh in 1969, paving the way for one of India's most popular singing duets to be united in personal life. The couple started singing ghazals, a form of singing that originated in 6th century Arabic verse. It wasn't until 1976, with the album The Unforgettables, that the couple received any kind of recognition or success. Ghazal singing is a very old Indian tradition, but it was Jagjit Singh who is credited with taking ghazals to the mainstream a...

Mary Leakey's 100th Birthday: A Look at Her Human Achievements

Image
Today marks the 100th birthday of anthropologist Mary Leakey, whose extensive research in Africa's Rift Valley taught us that our ancestors had capabilities far beyond the image of the primitive, brutish Neanderthal (although the existence of Arnold Schwarzenegger could argue against it). Born in 1913 in London, Mary Leakey showed little interest in her formal education and only found her calling once she discovered archaeology. She met her other famous half, archaeologist Louis Leakey, while illustrating his book, Adam's Ancestors, and in 1937, the pair married and became of the most famous science husband-wife teams (pictured above). (An interesting factoid to note: Louis mentored the likes of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas, who are now being referred to as Leakey's Angels.). A believer of Charles Darwin's theory that the human species originated in Africa, Leakey took her work to the Dark Contient and in 1960 discovered Homo habilis (t...
