‘The Bible’ trending after Sunday night History channel premiere

Image
This publicity image released by History shows Diogo Morcaldo as Jesus, center, being baptized by Daniel Percival, as John, in a scene from "The Bible," which premiered March 3 on History. (Joe Alblas - AP) It’s not every day that the Bible is trending on Twitter and Google. But it’s also not every day that a Hollywood power couple produces a 10-hour miniseries taking viewers from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation, all in HD. Reality TV producer Mark Burnett (of “Survivor” fame) and actress wife Roma Downey’s series, “The Bible,” premiered Sunday night on the History channel and took viewers from “In the beginning” to the Ten Commandments. You can watch a clip from behind-the-scenes below.

MIRIAM MAKEBA DOODLE: Google celebrates galvanizing ‘Mama Africa’ with gorgeous logo art

Image
HOW MUCH STRENGTH must a voice have to climb above the weight of injustice? How much character must a singer have to stand firm in the face of racism and oppression and cruelty and, eventually, exile? And how much powerful grace must an activist possess to draw millions to hear her message the world over? The measuring stick for answering those was embodied by one woman. South Africa’s first lady of song. Mama Africa. Miriam Makeba. Today, Google pays tribute to the late and great Makeba on what would have been her 81st birthday. A richly tinted Doodle depicts the anti-apartheid icon in stylish profile, wearing her traditional clothes, backdropped by the company’s logo set against earth tones.

Lauren Silberman stages pointless sideshow at regional combine

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- After the two pathetic and pitiful pseudo-kickoffs, after the stubborn refusal to say how far she'd ever actually kicked a football, Lauren Silberman still could have salvaged her day. She could have looked at the reporters from the 30-odd media outlets gathered at the New York Jets' facility, stared straight at the 20 television cameras filming this regional scouting combine and said: "The NFL opened this amazing door for me. I am a young entrepreneur. I have created a product geared toward professional athletes and I would be a lousy businesswoman if I didn't seize this once-in-a-lifetime platform." Unlock HQ Video HQ video delivered by Akamai But oh no, she didn't say that. She didn't even come close. She insisted she'd trained and over-trained, but she wouldn't say when exactly she first kicked a football. She swore she was better than what she showed Sunday, but wouldn't offer any anecdotal evidence to ev...

LIC equity investment cap provision still not clear

Image
The provision given by the Union finance ministry for government-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to invest up to 30 per cent in a company is still a grey area, it appears. A senior LIC official said it was still unclear if the equity investment cap applicable to them was 15 per cent or 30 per cent. The ministry is yet to notify the provision. In November 2012, former financial services secretary D K Mittal had said LIC could invest up to 30 per cent in a company. According to officials in the finance ministry and LIC, the latter is allowed to invest up to 30 per cent by the LIC Act, 1956. The law ministry, according to LIC sources, has said the Act’s provisions would hold in terms of an equity investment cap. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) had recently increased the equity cap for insurers from 10 per cent to 12 per cent and 15 per cent, depending on the size of the controlled fund of an insurer. The LIC official said the 15 per c...

Miami Heat’s ‘Harlem Shake’ helps build chemistry

Image
The Heat’s ode to the “Harlem Shake” YouTube craze nearly broke the Internet on Thursday night when LeBron James and Dwyane Wade released their video. By Friday night, it had been viewed more than six million times on YouTube. The video took James and Wade about 30 minutes to edit. Once they saw the final version, Wade said he “knew this was going to be pretty funny.” For instance, Wade is dressed like a teddy bear from Saturday Night Fever. “It’s a long season, man,” Wade said. “For us, it was just trying to enjoy the process. It’s going to be go time soon, and then we’re not going to be able to do anything.” The Heat’s players produced the video after winning 12 consecutive games and practically wrapping up the Eastern Conference with two months left in the season. Shane Battier is dressed like a “horse-stronaut.” “I had a very subtle role,” Battier said. “I was in the background, which is my sort of humor. You have to look hard to see me. “Whenever I’m tabbed for som...

Stolen ambulance results in Gary chase

GARY | A Police Department ambulance was stolen — resulting in a police chase — after the medical response vehicle was left running after being sent to treat a prisoner. At 2:30 p.m., Gary Police Department medics responded to an emergency call at 555 Polk Street and left their ambulance in the parking lot with the motor running while treating the patient. When the medics returned outside, they discovered the ambulance gone. Soon after, they learned the ambulance was being driven by 59-year-old Ricky Warren, of Gary. He struck a vehicle on 11th Grant, then proceeded south on Grant Street before officers were able to curb the vehicle on Ridge Road, police said. Grant was taken into custody, then transported to the hospital for treatment for injuries from the earlier crash.

Sinkhole swallows Florida man; 'I know in my heart he's dead,' brother says

Image
SEFFNER, Fla.— A Florida man was missing and feared dead on Friday after a large sinkhole suddenly swallowed the bedroom of his suburban Tampa home, police and fire officials said. Jeff Bush, 36, was in his room sleeping and the other five members of the household were getting ready for bed on Thursday night when they heard a loud crash and Jeff screaming. Jeff's brother, 35-year-old Jeremy Bush, jumped into the hole and furiously kept digging to find his brother. "I feel in my heart he didn't make it," Jeremy told Tampa TV station WFTS. "There were six of us in the house; five got out." Jeremy told television reporters on the scene, "I know in my heart he's dead." На экраны выходит фильм "Тайна перевала Дятлова"

Image

Movie Review I, Me Aur Main: Could have been a slap-up romantic comedy

Image
Cast: John Abraham, Chitrangada Singh, Prachi Desai, Raima Sen, Mini Mathur, Zarina Wahab Director: Kapil Sharma The Indian Express rating: ** The idea that a mommy's boy can, notionally, grow up is a deeply attractive one. This uphill task is what John Abraham's very-pleased-with-himself leading man is set up for in the self-explicatory 'I, Me Aur Main'. Given his job description, we know that Ishan Sabharwal will have to move a few notches up the growth scale: making him do it is the job of all the good-looking ladies in the cast. Said Mister Sabharwal is in a steady relationship but doesn't want to commit. What did you expect? Which is a problem for girlfriend Anushka ( Singh). No surprises there either. Into the widening gap arrives the chirpy Gauri ( Desai), who is up for a chuckle which could, conceivably, turn into a cuddle. So here's the man oscillating between two women, while also keeping affectionate sister Shivani ( Mathur) and moth...

'RIP buddy': DJ Ajax killed after being hit by a truck

Image
Tributes are pouring in for a well-known Australian DJ who has been killed in a collision with a truck in Melbourne. Adrian Thomas, known as DJ Ajax, is believed to have run onto a road in Melbourne's inner north and was struck by a truck in the early hours of Thursday morning. RIP to Ajax, my thoughts are with all the Australian homies, I can't believe this. Police said a pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a truck in Parkville on February 28. "It's believed the man ran in front of the north-bound truck on College Crescent shortly before 1am. He died at the scene," a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. Ajax was one of the founding members of the Bang Gang crew, and has been voted among Australia's top five DJs in the inthemix 50 poll each year since 2005. He took out the number one spot in both 2006 and 2007. In 2008 he launched his own record label, Sweat It Out, and regularly played the main stage at many of Australia's biggest ...

Bold new world begins for V8 Supercars

Image
The V8 Supercar revolution which roars into life at the season-opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide this weekend is a step into the future which will stretch well beyond contemporary engineering and thundering powerplants. The inaugural season of the Car of the Future concept will set the groundwork for a new fan base and almost certainly bring what was essentially a domestic category to world attention. While the Bathurst 1000 is one of the world’s most widely known touring car endurance races, the two local rival brands, Commodore and Falcon, are largely unheard of overseas. From 2011, the title ‘international’ was added to the V8 Supercars championship but, from now on, it is likely to be more than just a hollow honorific. New makers Mercedes Benz and Nissan join the Commodores and Falcons under the new rules, which will open up pit lane for more varied marquees to follow. In turn will come a new supporter base and more overseas interest with parity rules for all cars prim...
