Stolen ambulance results in Gary chase
GARY | A Police Department ambulance was stolen — resulting in a police chase — after the medical response vehicle was left running after being sent to treat a prisoner.
At 2:30 p.m., Gary Police Department medics responded to an emergency call at 555 Polk Street and left their ambulance in the parking lot with the motor running while treating the patient.
When the medics returned outside, they discovered the ambulance gone.
Soon after, they learned the ambulance was being driven by 59-year-old Ricky Warren, of Gary. He struck a vehicle on 11th Grant, then proceeded south on Grant Street before officers were able to curb the vehicle on Ridge Road, police said.
Grant was taken into custody, then transported to the hospital for treatment for injuries from the earlier crash.
